New box set captures the best films scores from 1985

Six and a half hours of iconic film soundtracks, including new symphony orchestra recordings

1985 was one of the best years in cinematic history thanks to the release of films including Cocoon, Back to the Future, The Goonies, St. Elmo’s Fire, Legend, Out of Africa, and even Rambo: First Blood Part II. From the Oscar-winning to the cult classic, the year was packed with great movie moments. Inextricably tied to those moments are the scores and songs that are as memorable as the films themselves. That’s why Varèse Sarabande Records is celebrating the music of the movies with a new 6-CD box set, Back In Time … 1985 At The Movies.

The highlight of the package is brand new recordings of classic themes from films like The Color Purple, A View to a Kill, Brazil, Silverado, Legend, and more. David Newman conducted the debut performance of the Varèse Sarabande Symphony Orchestra at 20th Century Fox’s historic Newman Scoring Stage for the sessions, which were produced by Robert Townson.

Also featured are selections of original scores from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure by Danny Elfman, Spies Like Us and The Black Cauldron by Elmer Bernstein, The Bride and Enemy Mine by Maurice Jarre, North and South by Bill Conti, and Jagged Edge by John Barry. Also included are complete CDs featuring Out of AfricaThe Goonies, and The Back to the Future Trilogy (recordings of Part I and Part II from John Debney and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, plus Alan Silvestri original score for Part III).

Finally, there’s a 10-track disc featuring some of the best original songs from ’85 cinema. That includes Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” from Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome, Survivor’s “Burning Heart” from Rocky IV, Oingo Boingo’s title track from Weird Science, and Bryan Ferry’s “Is Your Love Strong Enough” from Legend.

The collection, housed in an LP-style gatefold sleeve with artwork from A Nightmare on Elm Street artist Matthew Joseph Peak, is on sale now at Varèse Sarabande’s website for $99.98. A special package, Back in Time… 1985 The Concert Experience, is also available, and includes a pair of VIP seats and passes to the after party and meet-and-greet for a special live performance of some of the scores on June 11th at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center. The performance will see Bruce Broughton conducting his Silverado score, David Shire conducting his Return to Oz score, and many more surprise.

Below, take a look at the packaging and the complete tracklist.
