Los Angeles songwriter Kathyrn Baar has been writing ghoulish and ominous tracks as SPELLES since 2009. Along the way, she passed along her demo to friends, one of whom introduced her to producer Bill Lefler (Dashboard Confessional, Low Vs Diamond). The two hit it off and began recording songs together, building towards the completion of her debut album. In the interim, she’s shared the folksy “Bird In A Cage” and menacing “Out Of The Canyon”. Now, she’s getting even heavier with her latest single, “Rib Cage”.
“’Rib Cage’ was my reaction to a moment where for the first time I felt like my best wasn’t good enough,” Baar says of the song. “I started writing it on just the A string on my guitar, and it felt really primal and spooky. It was one of the first songs [I wrote] as SPELLES.”
Opening up with a grimy monotone riff, the song quickly escalates with a booming bass drum pattern. Baar’s venomous voice creeps in with just a slight bit of distortion, making her presence announced and fearsome. The arrangement veers toward minimalist, with sparse verses giving Baar room to showcase her powerful vocals. If this is what Baar sounds like when she feels she’s not “good enough,” she must leave a wake of wreckage when she gets a confidence boost. Listen in below.
