Last month, Björk delivered a surprise DJ set at Tri Angle Records’ fifth anniversary party in New York. Her playlist included cuts by genre-bending producers like The Haxan Cloak, Evian Christ, and Forest Swords. This week, The Haxan Cloak is returning the favor by whipping up a remix of “Mouth Mantra”, off Björk’s latest album, Vulnicura.
The English producer, born Bobby Krlic, had one of 2013’s best albums in the murky Excavation. He brings some of that same dark magic to the rework, making the Vulnicura original feel doubly haunting and frenetic. The new version is part of Björk’s ongoing remix series, which also features contributions by Texas’ Rabit and London’s UNTOLD. Listen in below.
Björk spoke about the reworking in a statement:
“after bobby ( the haxan cloak ) had mixed vulnicura ( and made one beat ) i was kinda keen asking him if there was any song he´d be up for taking further as a remix and he said mouth mantra … it was humbling for me to see one person take on like a whole album of mine like that , listen to it like thousand times and curious after him being soaked in it for months , where he thought he could take it further ? i am enjoying extremely this version live now as he is playing it w me on this summers festivals : it just takes off rocket style ha ha ha ha ha i almost forgot singing last time we played it”
The Haxan Cloak is no stranger to Björk’s music; he’s credited with producing the Vulnicura track “Family”.
