Chaz Bundick released his latest album as Toro Y Moi, What For?, just earlier this year. Lately, however, he’s been dropping one-off tracks that stray considerably from that album’s chill, funkified vibes. First came the trap-heavy “Room for 1Zone”, and now he’s shared “2Late”, featuring Kool A.D. of Das Racist and an affiliate of the former rap group, SAFE.
Bundick provides a watery, wobbly beat of classic laid-back hip-hop over which the two rappers sing-rap their shared bars. Their vocals bubble and echo with heavily altered effects as Bundick appears in the background to coo out some gentle notes. It all comes together for something that feels like a smoked-out cousin of Toro Y Moi and Kool A.D.’s past collaboration, “The Front”. Take a listen:
It’s interesting that the randomly inserted numbers in “Room for 1Zone” and “2Late” are sequential; could Bundick be slowly leaking out a mixtape of sorts? We’ll see if a 3 pops up in the coming days.
