It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours for Glasgow synthpop outfit CHVRCHES. Yesterday, they announced their highly anticipated sophomore followup, Every Open Eye, and now they’ve shared the album’s lead single, “Leave A Trace”.

Like a young and vitriolic Kate Bush, frontwoman Lauren Mayberry sings with a slick pace and takes a hammer to the past, admitting: “I will wipe the salt off my skin and admit that I am wrong.” It’s moving stuff and just as catchy as, say, “Recover”.

That’s not all, either. Last night, CHVRCHES performed at Ottawa Bluesfest, where they unlocked a few new tracks, including “Clearest Blue”, the aforementioned “Leave A Trace”, and “Make Them Gold”. The quality isn’t too sharp on the videos (we’ll look for better quality), but take a listen below.

In an interview with Alt 98.7, Mayberry spoke about the new album at length. According to her, the band took a “less is more” approach to recording. Instead of splurging on a fancy studio, the Glasgow natives returned to the same place where they made The Bones of What You Believe — a converted flat outfitted with soundproofing materials. As Mayberry explained, after being on the road for over two years, they simply wanted the “comforting sense of routine and home” and sought to “eliminate outside influences as much as possible.” The band got to work late last year and emerged from their recording sessions around March with as many as 20 to 25 songs to choose from.

Overall, Mayberry said that the new album retains CHVRCHES’ trademark sound, juxtaposing “demure” verses and “aggressive” choruses, “light and dark, vulnerability and strength.” Lyrically, it’s inspired by the frontwoman’s own life experiences; she noted the importance of “writing something that can be your stamp or motto for that [personal] experience,” claiming that it helps her process things better.

Choosing “Leave a Trace” as the LP’s lead single was a no-brainer for the band, as it’s said to best represent the album. (It also happens to be Mayberry’s favorite track.)
