Every year, Hollywood descends on Park City, UT for the Sundance Film Festival. Companies jockey with each other for the chance to release some of the most exciting films from outside the studio system, with many movies being bought up for millions of dollars before they even start showing. This year, director John Crowley’s Brooklyn was the most sought after film of all, and was bought for the highest price: 9 million dollars by Fox Searchlight. Today, the first trailer for the film, penned by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), has been released.
Right away, it’s easy to see why the drama started garnering Oscar buzz as soon as its Sundance premiere concluded. Brooklyn stars Saoirse Ronan as Eilis, a young Irish woman who leaves her home and family in search of work in America. Though initially beset with homesickness, she begins to enjoy herself more in the wake of a new romance with a young Italian (Emory Cohen). After a death in the family draws her back to Ireland, Eilis is courted by a man from her hometown (Domhnall Gleeson) and must choose between her new life and love in America, or staying in Ireland with her family and the man that everyone tells her is right for her.

The film also stars Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. Based on the novel of the same name by Colm Tóibín, Brooklyn is due in theaters November 6th.
