Starz is set to get groovy when they premiere Ash Vs. Evil Dead this Halloween. The 10-episode series reunites director Sam Raimi with star Bruce Campbell as the title character, and now we have our first look at the chainsaw-handed hero (via Entertainment Weekly).
It’s been 22 years since Ash last battled the Deadite hordes, and he’s become “grizzled and just wants to be left alone,” Campbell told EW. “He was perfectly happy doing basically nothing: telling lies about how he lost his hand in bars late at night. That was basically his MO. So, he’s not really the guy who should be dealing with this right now. But … he is. He’s our guy!”
And leave it to that guy to dimwittedly unleash evil upon the world once more. “He’s the only one stupid enough to really tamper with those spirits,” added Raimi, who returned to direct episode one of the series. “And he does. But he’s also still a really good monster fighter. So, he’s also going to be kicking some Deadite buttocks, if you’ll pardon the French.”
Discussing the story-telling style the show will explore, Campbell called it “The Searchers with carnage and mayhem. I’m relegated a little bit into the John Wayne mode these days with my team — the young, virile, evil fighters who will pair up with Ash and take on this nemesis: this never ending, ever evolving nemesis.”
Raimi and Campbell have plans for at least five seasons, but with the first just filming now in New Zealand, we’ll have to wait and see how long the Deadites will pester ol’ Ash on TV.
