After wrenching our nerves last year with Jonathan Glazer’s terrifying Under the Skin, 2014’s Composer of the Year Mica Levi returns to her experimental pop outfit, Micachu and The Shapes. The trio, rounded out by drummer Marc Pell and keyboardist Raisa Khan, has come together again to release their first studio album in three years, Good Sad Happy Bad, due out September 11th via Rough Trade.
The album came to fruition after the three friends started rehearsing in an East London studio and lost themselves in an hours-long jam. Without telling anyone, Pell recorded the session on an Edirol field recorder, and the two were so overwhelmed by the music that the collage of sounds essentially became the first echoes of the new album. As Levi contends, “For me it’s the most free we have been.”
For a short medication of what’s to come, they’ve offered up new track, “Oh Baby”. The three-and-a-half minute song’s a hollowed out soul lounging around with a cup of Joe on a fall day. And if this is what’s to come, we’re in for a solid album for this forthcoming autumn season. Listen below.
