Mick Jenkins first started garnering attention with his 2014 mixtape The Water[s], and has been teasing its follow-up all year. First came the hard-hitting “Alchemy”, and then came his alphabetically-minded “P’s and Q’s”. Now, he’s returned with a new single to coincide with the official announcement of his next effort, Wave[s].
A nine-track EP featuring production from Lee Bannon, ThemPeople, Kaytranada, and others, Waves[s] is out August 21st on Jenkins’ own Free Nation imprint under the Cinematic Music Group label. Guests include previous collaborators Sean Deaux, Saba, and The Mind. Hayveyah McGowan, a painter from Kansas City, was commissioned to create 30″ by 30″ paintings to serve as artwork for each song on the collection, and you can see the piece he created for the cover ahead.
Along with all the details, Jenkins has shared “Get Up Get Down”, a track featuring production by ThemPeople and Stefan Ponce. The cut is an old-school jam filled with summery vibes that get swallowed by a pit of low rumbling bass halfway through. Before things get too heavy, though, Jenkins spits a furiously fast hook: “Isn’t it ironic/ Got ’em hooked on phonics/ Mama used to think it was just chronic/ It was all bad.”
Take a listen below, followed by McGowan’s track-specific art, and the full Wave[s] tracklist and artwork.
