ProbCause announces Drifters EP, shares new song “I Feel U” — listen

Chicago rapper embraces city's roots with eclectic production

Chicago’s hip-hop scene has evolved significantly since rapper ProbCause first emerged in 2002. Throughout it all, he’s been able to be a sub-genre chameleon, transitioning his production while maintaining his core flow. He’s also kept a prolific output pace, releasing the Waves EP last year and a collaborative EP with Hologram Kizzie as ZRO FOX this past January. Now, he’s blending the city’s past and present with yet another EP, Drifters, out August 4th.

The new effort’s first single, “I Feel U”, twists and turns between a variety of sounds and aesthetics. One second there are grimy trap drums and jazzy piano flourishes, then soulful horns jump forward in the mix. ProbCause is a veritable Dante leading the listener through the seven layers of Chicago’s sound. Along the way, he spits out mantras to encourage people to handle their own problems, promising that he’ll do the same. It’s about as Chi-Town as it comes, with every beat ringing like a testament to ProbCause and the scene’s history.
