Whether you know it or not, The Dan Band is the most popular wedding band in the world. Their notoriety comes in no small part from frontman Dan Finnerty’s appearance in two comedy classics: The Hangover and Old School. Finnerty and his band’s outrageous, nth level takes on your wedding DJ’s most-spun tracks have created impossible demand for them at receptions everywhere. There’s only one problem: They’re not actually a wedding band.
No, The Dan Band is just your good ol’ fashion comedy band. But fear not, all you betrothed: Finnerty and the boys aren’t damning you to some hum-drum ceremony. To supplement their own presence on your big day, the band is releasing The Wedding Album this July 10th via Comedy Dynamics. The album features F-bomb laden covers (Air Supply’s “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All”, Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love”, plus a medley of R. Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind” and Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You”) and originals featuring the likes of Pussycat Doll’s Nicole Scherzinger, Train’s Pat Monahan, Fitz and the Tantrums’ Jeremy Ruzumna, and comedian Bridget Everett, all perfectly ill-suited for your big day.
The latest sample from the release, “Three Way” was co-written by none other than Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty. As the title suggests, the track deals with that make-it-or-break-it dilemma of even the most perfect relationship: the mysterious threesome. Finnerty tells Consequence of Sound:
“I met Rob Thomas at a premiere in NYC and a few weeks later I tweeted him to ask him if he’d be up for writing a song with me for this album. He tweeted back and we made a plan to meet out at his home studio. He told me to take the train and he’d pick me up at the station and I was honestly 98% sure it would turn out that it hadn’t been the real Rob Thomas I’d been tweeting with and that I would end up in some Kathy Bates movie. To my relief, the real Rob was there to pick me up and we went to his place to write the song. We wanted it to follow the theme of the album, which is songs for weddings that are wrong for weddings. We wrote it from the point of view of a guy who is complaining about his girlfriend, when it’s pretty clear there’s nothing wrong with her. It turns out he’s just mad that she offered to have a three way and when he got all excited, she told him she’d only been kidding and that ‘hurt him real bad.’ So I think it’d be a nice first dance song … or at least a last dance song.”
At once touching, heartbreaking, and stupidly hilarious, “Three Way” is streaming below.
