Toro y Moi dropped a brand new album, What For?, just a few months ago, but you’d think he’s prepping another LP judging by his prolific output since then. Many of these one-off releases have strayed from Toro Y Moi’s typical electronic sound, such as the trap-heavy “Room for 1Zone”, the chaotic instrumental “That Instead of This”, and the Kool A.D.-aided number “2Late”. His latest offering, a joint track with Rome Fortune called “Pitch Black”, is a similarly unexpected turn.

Here, Toro y Moi provides a fidgety, ominous backdrop for Rome, an Atlanta-based MC who recently linked up with Four Tet for a string of singles. Could the former chillwave pioneer be eyeing a career in hip-hop production? He’s certainly got the ear for it. Listen in below.
