For nearly 15 years, Michael Mann has tried to get his biopic about Enzo Ferrari out of the garage. Now, after extensive research and delicate negotiating, he’s made the film his next project and he’s already landed his leading star — Christian Bale.
The two worked together on 2009’s Public Enemies (see above) and they’ll re-team next summer when shooting begins from a script by Troy Kennedy Martin (The Italian Job) and David Rayfield (Out of Africa).
Based on Brock Yates’ book, Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the film will take place in the ’50s and follow the iconic car company’s manufacturer in his quest for success and love. As such, a female lead will be cast in the months to come.
Mann, who is coming off this year’s unfortunate cyberthriller Blackhat, will shop the film at the upcoming Venice and Toronto film festivals. Given the star power and name recognition behind this baby, he shouldn’t have a problem.
