A new David Bowie song called “Blackstar” serves as the theme for the upcoming British crime drama series The Last Panthers. The foreboding number features eerie robot-like vocals set against morose strings. Listen in below.
According to the show’s director, Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead), “Blackstar” came to fruition after he and and Bowie met up during filming:
“I showed Mr. Bowie the two first episodes in the rough state they were at the time, and he liked what he saw very much. We discussed the various aspects of the show; naturally the plot line, but also the underlying currents of guilt and personality flaws. We talked about the dark heart of Europe. We talked about the biblical aspects of human nature. He asked if there was anything else to see, so I showed him the first concept board i had just made for the title sequence – images from the show laced with chimaeras and demons from the worlds of Bosch and Grunewald. That’s when he said go – it all fits. Then he played me his new song ‘BLACKSTAR’.”
The Last Panthers, a six-part series from Sky and CANAL+, stars Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton, Golden Globe winner John Hurt, and Tahir Rahim, among others. It’s set to air on November 12th.
As for Bowie, the music legend has proven to be quite prolific since releasing his comeback album The Next Day in 2013. He recorded two new songs for a career-spanning retrospective, is co-writing a play based on The Man Who Fell To Earth, and is penning original music for a SpongeBob Squarepants musical.
