Carey Lander, the longtime keyboardist of Camera Obscura, has died following a lengthy battle with bone cancer.
The band announced news of Lander’s passing on Facebook, writing, “It is with the greatest sadness, that we must share the news that Carey passed away peacefully this morning after her illness with cancer. We have lost our friend and band mate, and our deepest sympathy goes out to her partner Kenny, and to all her family and friends.”
A member of the Scottish indie pop band since 2002, Lander appeared on every Camera Obscura record beginning with 2003’s Underachievers, including their most recent LP, 2013’s Desire Lines.
The band recently took a hiatus from the road due to Lander’s treatment. During the final months of her life, Lander launched a JustGiving page to raise funding for the cancer charity Sarcoma UK. “It’s probably too late to help me,” Lander said at the time, “but it would be great if we could find something in the future that means children don’t have to undergo such awful treatment and have a better chance of survival.”
