Brooklyn songwriter concludes three-part EP series centering around a tumultuous break-up

Everyday Crimes Against Objects of Desire, Vol III

Late last year, Wilder Maker, aka Brooklyn songwriter Gabriel Birnbaum, announced plans to record an ambitious three-part EP series called Everyday Crimes Against Objects of Desire. Each EP would be recorded in a different studio with a different musical approach, but the subject matter would be the same: examining a tumultuous break-up. Birnbaum has compared the project to Wallace Stevens’ famous poem “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird”  – an exercise in perspective and finding beauty and sorrow from different points of view.

Almost a year since volume one was released, Birnbaum is now ready to finish his heartbreaking tome with Everyday Crimes Against Objects of Desire, Vol. III, out October 9th. A press release describes this final installment as being the point “where the torment you suffer over the other person fades away (mostly) and you’re left alone with yourself, the real source of the torment.” It’s also the most experimental of the three volumes, as he brought in woodwinds and additional players to fill out the sound.

The sense of despair hangs heavy over the EP’s six tracks. Birnbaum’s vocals feel forlorn, wearing the familiar agony that comes with self-deprecation. While the songs provide a space to wallow in self-pity, they simultaneously feel like a comforting embrace thanks to the lush harmonies and understated guitar playing. Ending with a new version of “Hope Springs” from the first volume gives a sense of closure to the entire project, letting Birnbaum bellow one last time before letting go of the pain and accepting his current state.
