Sun Kil Moon and Jesu share “Exodus”, a 10-minute ode to parents who’ve lost children — listen

Members of Slowdive and Low also feature on the sorrowful track

Sun Kil Moon and Jesu (aka Justin Broadrick) will release their collaborative album on February 19th through Caldo Verde Records. They’ve shared the relatively playful “America’s Most Wanted Mark Kozelek and John Dillinger”, but have taken a more somber tone on their latest song, “Exodus”.

In July, the music world was saddened to learn of the accidental death of Nick Cave’s 15-year-old son, Arthur. Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek has seen an unfortunate number of parents lose their children, so the news was especially impactful to him. Learning of the tragedy while getting into a taxi at Heathrow Airport, “The news hit me like a bus into a hill,” he sings on “Exodus”. While Cave’s loss may have been the inspiration for the nearly 10-minute ode, it actually goes out “for all bereaved parents,” as the sorrowful refrain goes at the end.

Joining Jesu and Kozelek in this touching tribute are Rachel Goswell of Slowdive and Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk of Low. Take a listen at the Caldo Verde website, or via the rip below.

In addition to Goswell and Sparhawk, Jesu/Sun Kil Moon features Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock and Will Oldham, among others, according to Caldo Verde’s website.
