yOya share dreamy new song “Echoes” — listen

Corvalis, Oregon duo examines how relationships fall apart with latest single

yOya’s Alex Pfender and Noah Dietterich have cultivated a bond since their adolescence. The folktronica duo has been friends since they entered fifth grade in Corvalis, Oregon. As such, kinship has been a major part of their music since the beginning. It’s even recently manifested in a newly launched website where fans can buy a beer for their friends attending yOya shows across state lines. On their latest track, however, the two friends are examining what it looks like for a relationship to fall apart.

The follow-up to the tender ballad “The Heartwood”, “Echoes” is full of “Fleetwood Mac guitar and keyboard sounds” and “acrobatic vocal harmony borrowed from Crosby, Stills, and Nash,” as the band explains to Consequence of Sound. They add, “Friends and lovers slowly, naturally, drift apart in ‘Echoes’, and try their best not to look back. The narrative shifts between storylines as synth stasis gives way to a driving electronic mosaic which then evaporates into sparse confessional.”

Even when singing about relationship breakdowns, Pfender and Dietterich still manage to blend their voices together into soothing tones. The plucking guitars and mandolins twirl effortlessly around synthesizer bellows. The two sing about catching glimpses of friends dancing, feelings of jealousy, and longing for something else. It’s a gentle and breezy song that touches on some of the most regrettable feelings.
