Nashville is called “Music City” for a reason. Though it originally gained its reputation for breaking a multitude of country stars, the city has since evolved into an epicenter for all types of artists to come cut their teeth and crank out hits. With dreams of musical success of their own, Jordan Phillips and Adam Stark found themselves working as cogs in this never-ending wheel of pop consumption, writing and producing tracks for talent passing through the city. Unsatisfied with their creative output, they eventually had enough.

The two songwriters decided to break away from the system and branch out on their own, seeking to make pop music with “authenticity.” Bonding over this goal, they decided to team up and formed Apollo LTD. Now, they’re showing what it’s like to make pop music on their own terms with their debut track, “What Are You Waiting For”.

“We jokingly say, ‘It’s just your typical pop song about existential crisis,’ but at its core that’s really what it is,” Phillips tells Consequence of Sound. “It was a song that sort of just came out of us as we were searching for what the next phase of our life would be. It’s simple, but we felt like in its own way it spoke truth to us and we quickly realized it needed to go on the record. It sort of had this strange juxtaposition of emotions — light and darkness, hope and fear, belief and doubt — all sort of wrapped up into one tune and it encapsulated our lives at that time for sure.”

Phillips and Stark’s expert grasp of the pop genre shines on the track. Each melody could be a hook in its own right, from the “na na na” opening to the elated falsetto in the chorus. Clinking piano chords and fuzzed out guitar riffs blend in the background, giving the song a slight rock edge without ever leaving pop territory. It’s a radio friendly single with bite, living up to the band’s proposed vision.
