This year sees Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers commemorating its 20th year in the record making game. Though there’s a celebratory concert scheduled for December 4th, some of the label’s biggest names got together to give fans an early anniversary gift. Hometown heroes Atmosphere have joined up with Aesop Rock and Blueprint for the surprise new track “The Lonely Rose”.

Over a smooth yet dusty beat by Plain Ole Bill that sounds like the house band at some sort of funky cowboy bar, Slug, Blueprint, and Aesop trade off verses. Slug comes out with his typically sturdy flow as he spits, “I’m the motherfucking man when I’m standing in it/ ‘Cause I don’t know how to swim/ But I project the image that I’m gonna go all in.” Blueprint picks up on the theme for his own part, rapping, “Movin’ fast don’t mean it won’t end quick/ Why put your toes in when you can skinny dip?” But it’s Aesop’s bars that really stand out, as his distinctive cadence and tone separate him from his companions. “Poked your brain matter/ Adequately curious,” he rhymes. “Pick a perfect patsy/ Herd ’em back into the turnip truck.”
