“Listen to me, the human world… it’s a mess,” Sebastian warns the ever naive Ariel in Disney’s 1989 blockbuster hit, The Little Mermaid. They’re choice words, especially from a goddamn sea crab, and yet fairly prescient for today’s news, which just so happens to involve the same story by Hans Christian Andersen.
Earlier this year, director Sofia Coppola dropped out of Working Title and Universal’s live-action retelling of The Little Mermaid. As Variety reports, she wasn’t too keen on casting a major star to lead the film, which seems like somewhat of a departure for her given that she’s had Kirsten Dunst and Emma Watson headline her past works.
Nevertheless, the two studios are still going ahead with the project and have found their leading star for the titular role: Chloë Grace Moretz. And while they’ve yet to fill the director’s chair, they’re currently attempting to nab Love Actually screenwriter Richard Curtis to adapt the story.
It’s a solid start, especially if Curtis pans out, and it’ll be interesting to see who else jumps in the water with them. In the meantime, revisit more words from Sebastian with this great song that most certainly won’t be in this Disney-less film.
