Chromatics share two covers of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” — listen

In fact, the band has seven different versions of the song on the way

There’s still no word on when we’ll finally get to hear Chromatics’ long-promised new LP, Dear Tommy. Perhaps they’ve gotten sidetracked covering Cyndi Lauper’s classic “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. The band’s rendition first surfaced in a fashion commercial for MANGO. Today, however, they’ve shared two complete versions of the track and announced a full seven-version single due out this Friday.

Neither is the rendition featured on the MANGO ad, but both are equally intriguing. The first is called “Girls Just Wanna Have Some”, the play apparently being on the stripped down version of the track. Here, the song is swirled through a drugged haze, like a mellow escapist’s high where you just sit and watch the walls vibrate a bit. The other, “Girls Just Wanna Have Dub”, is neither dubstep nor exactly dub, but removes all the percussive elements. What’s left are layers of synths that constantly build up a tension that’s never allowed to break in any big way, but never lets the song drop, either. Take a listen to both covers below via videos featuring a split-visioned Ruth Radelet dancing on a beach.

The descriptions for both videos say a full single release of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” is due out Friday, November 6th. Purchases will presumably be done through Italians Do It Better, and you can find the full tracklist, which features seven different versions, below.
