Erykah Badu has a new mixtape titled But You Caint Use My Phone due out over Thanksgiving weekend. Last month, she previewed the release with her remix of Drake’s “Hotline Bling”, which she’d dubbed as “HOTLINE BLING BUT U CAINT USE MY PHONE”. Today, she’s back with “Phone Down”, another cellular device-referencing cut.
“This one’s for Aubrey,” Badu writes, likely referencing one of the track’s songwriters, Aubrey Davis. In my mind, however, it plays out like yet another another ode to Aubrey Graham. The song is outfitted with moody yet sparse production, not unlike the kind of backdrop Noah “40” Shebib often pieces together for Drizzy. Listen in below.
In addition to her But You Caint Use My Phone project, Badu recently staged a one-woman show — it did not go well.
