Drake’s “Hotline Bling” is one of the year’s biggest hits, topping charts and spurring on memes galore. Which made its omission from the 2016 Grammy Awards somewhat surprising. The song was released two months months prior to the Grammy’s September 30th cutoff, and in the months since, it’s fully immersed itself in America’s cultural lexicon. So what then was the reason for its snubbing?

According to music industry website Hits Daily Double (via The Daily Beast), it was a clerical error. Apparently, Cash Money Records never submitted “Hotline Bling” for Grammy consideration.

Regardless of the error, Drake still racked up five Grammy nods, including Best Rap Album (If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late), Best Rap Song (“Energy”), and Best Rap Performance (“Back to Back”). As for “Hotline Bling”, perhaps Drake will get another crack at a Grammy whenever he and Adele decided to drop the song’s official remix.
