James Franco has never been one to limit himself, delving into ventures as varied as random art exhibitions, a book on Lana Del Rey, and even a trip back to college. The Renaissance Man employs that same open-minded approach to his acting career, which has seen him not only take on roles for the big screen, but also for the likes of Hulu, where he’s set to star in the forthcoming series adaptation of Stephen King’s 11/22/63.
This week, Franco has forged yet another new and unexpected relationship, this time with Lifetime, the same channel known for its so-so/often unauthorized biopics and day-long marathons of Designing Women and Golden Girls. (Full disclosure: I never miss the latter.) Franco will executive produce and write the story for the upcoming remake of Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?. The original film aired on NBC back in 1996 and starred Tori Spelling as a woman tangled up with an obsessive boyfriend.
Melanie Aitkenhead (Franco’s Actors Anonymous) has been tapped to direct, with a script provided by Amber Coney (Class). As The Hollywood Reporter points out, Mother, May I Sleep With Danger? marks the latest Lifetime film spearheaded by an unlikely high-profile star, following Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig’s A Deadly Adoption earlier this year.
As for what else is in the pipeline for Franco? He’s currently filming The Disaster Artist, which chronicles the making of Tommy Wiseau’s oh-so-terrible film The Room.
