This week, Madonna descended on Paris as part of her Rebel Heart World Tour. While the sold-out concert was another example of a returning sense of normalcy following November’s terror attacks, the city remains in mourning. As such, Madge took to Paris’ public square on Wednesday night for an acoustic busking performance in honor of the victims.
“Everybody knows why we’re here,” Madonna said as a crowd gathered. “We just want to sing a few songs about peace, just to spread love and joy, and to pay our honor and respect to the people who died almost four weeks ago. And to spread light, in the place of darkness … we all need it.”
Backed by the guitarist Monte Pittman and the voices of those gathered around, Madonna covered John Lennon’s iconic song for peace, “Imagine”, as well as her own classic, “Like a Prayer”, and “Ghosttown” from this year’s Rebel Heart. Check out fan-shot footage of all three songs below.
