Billy Corgan is full of surprises. One second he’s talking about Marilyn Manson’s penis size, the next, he’s sitting down to play some pretty damned beautiful acoustic guitar with an unsuspecting folk singer.
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman was cutting through Cushing, Oklahoma while promoting/filming his upcoming documentary on American values when he stopped at the small AM radio station KUSH 1600. Though the interview was scheduled, no one told the morning show’s other guests, local folk singer Katie Williams and guitarist Bob Moore. To their surprise, Corgan offered to sit in with the musicians for an acoustic performance of one of Williams’ songs.
Corgan remained silent for the first verse while he studied the chord progression and feel of the song, but dropped in with some forlorn note bending on the bridge. Thankfully for those not in KUSH’s listening area, author Guy Lozier was also in studio promoting his book series The Mind Rift Saga (for which Corgan also did a short promo video) and filmed the performance.
Check out the performance and interview, wherein he discusses how he got media outlets to write about Marilyn Manson’s penis (guilty), below.
