Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes share new single “Get Mine” — listen

Plus, a video for the track off the forthcoming Bemidji EP

Nashville indie rockers Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes aren’t sitting around waiting for their big break. They’ve been tearing up their local scene since their 2011 debut, Civilized Man, earning praise from all sorts of national outlets and industry folk (including yours truly). They followed it up in 2014 with Kid Tiger, a record that garnered them even more buzz as a band on the edge of stardom. But on their forthcoming Bemidji EP (March 11th), the four-piece is making it clear that fame can take all the sweet time it needs, because they’re going to keep delivering the high-energy music they always have. If you don’t dig it, then get the hell out of the way.

That’s exactly the message of the EP’s new single, “Get Mine”. With Ellsworth tipping a hat to late-era The Black Keys right down to the Dan Auerbach cadence, heavy bass and reverberating guitars drive the track while the frontman pounds away at his keys. As the title suggests, the bluesy stomper kicks mud right back in the eyes of any mudslingers. “I’ve paid my dues,” Ellsworth sings assuredly on the second verse. “40 paces, turn and shoot/ Oh, but I’m faster/ I’ll out last you, gentlemen.”

“At its core, ‘Get Mine’ is about the idea that nobody is going to make things happen for you,” Ellsworth says. “If you want something to happen, go make it happen. Sitting around and relying on other people will backfire every time. Life is short. Do what you want to do how you want to do it and tell anyone in your way to step aside.”

The band has also shared the black-and-white video for “Get Mine”. “We took a little different approach to making the video for ‘Get Mine’,” explains guitarist Timon Lance. “We wanted to have a kind of underground-show vibe with shots of us playing in a smoky room with crass lighting. The shots of the band singing lyrics were done on a walking bridge over the interstate in the middle of Nashville’s worst snow storm since 2003. It was absolutely as freezing cold as it looks but we had a damn good time, as always.”
