Mere hours before David Bowie’s death, a tribute concert was announced for March 31st at New York City’s historic Carnegie Hall. Following the icon’s passing, the event became a memorial and quickly sold out. A second date was added for April 1st at Radio City Music Hall, and now more performers have been announced for both shows.
The lineup now includes Debbie Harry solo at Carnegie Hall and with Blondie at Radio City Music Hall. Appearing at both shows will be Pixies, Mumford and Sons, Bette Midler, and the Donny McCaslin Group (with Mark Guiliana, Jason Lindner, and Tony Visconti). The members of the Donny McCaslin Group collaborated with Bowie on his final album, ★ (Blackstar), which was produced by Visconti. Jherek Bischoff, Amanda Palmer, Anna Calvi, who recently covered “Blackstar” on Palmer and Bischoff’s Strung Out in Heaven: A Bowie String Quartet Tribute release, will also perform at Radio City.
Update – Monday, March 28th at 3:20 p.m. CT: Patti Smith, Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, and Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz will appear at the March 31st concert. Mascis, Esperanza Spalding, and TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone will perform on the April 1st event.
Michael Stipe of R.E.M. was already scheduled for the Carnegie Hall show and now joins the Radio City lineup as well. Heart sisters Nancy and Ann Wilson will also perform at both events. Other performers previously announced include Cyndi Lauper, Cat Power, The Roots, Perry Farrell, The Mountain Goats, Jakob Dylan, Robyn Hitchcock, The Polyphonic Spree, and more. More artists are expected to be announced in the coming days.
