Anne Hathaway is on board for Princess Diaries 3

Director Garry Marshall confirms upcoming sequel in new interview

Rejoice, people of Genovia and beyond! It looks like a Princess Diaries 3 might be on the way, complete with Anne Hathaway reprising her breakthrough role of Princess Mia Thermopolis.

Although Disney dispelled rumors of a new Princess Diaries film last year, director Garry Marshall says Hathaway has recently expressed interest in returning to the project.

“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” Marshall told PEOPLE. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”

Hathaway and Marshall worked together on the original film, 2001’s The Princess Diaries, and its sequel, 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. The movies are based on Meg Cabot’s own book series of the same name, which follows Thermopolis, a woman who discovers she’s the rightful heir to the throne of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia.

It’s unclear if Princess Diaries 3 will include any other returning cast members, but Chris Pine, who played opposite Hathaway in Princess Diaries 2, has suggested he’d be open to revisiting the series. When asked about the possibility of a third installment earlier this year, he told “Have you been reading my diary?”
