Days before At the Drive-In are set to kick off their world tour, the band has announced the departure of founding member/guitarist Jim Ward.

In a statement posted to Facebook, ATDI wrote, “As our ship prepares for voyage, we announce that Jim Ward will not be joining us on future journeys. We wish him well and are excited to see you soon.”

The news is surprising, but not totally unexpected. When word first surfaced that At the Drive-In would be playing shows in 2016, Ward “seemed rather surprised,” according to an interview with the El Paso Times. “Ward said he knew that the band had been listed among performers at the festival, but added that he could neither confirm nor deny whether ATDI would actually be performing at this time.”

Ward founded At the Drive-In alongside Cedric Bixler-Zavala in 1993. Following the band’s initial breakup in 2001, Ward started the bands Sparta and Sleepercar, and remains active in both.
