South by Southwest kicked off its music programming on Tuesday (as seen with photos here of Dale Watson), but its second day is when things really hit high gear.
The day began with a packed house to hear First Lady Michelle Obama deliver one of the event’s keynote addresses, presented as a conversation about women’s education with panelists Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Sophia Bush, and Diane Warren. Later Iggy Pop and Josh Homme performed their second night at ACL in support of their collaborative album, Post Pop Depression, while Ryan Adams and The Avett Brothers posed a formative double bill at the JW Marriott Austin.
But it wasn’t just a day for marquee names, as Julien Baker, Eleanor Friedberger, and Car Seat Headrest played an intimate showcase at Central Presbyterian Church, while rising acts as varied as Deap Vally, Frankie Cosmos, Ezra Furman and the Boy-Friends, Methyl Ethel, Sioux Falls (at a way unofficial house party), and Sunflower Bean all provided memorable moments.
