Like many a murder mystery, the story of DTCV (pronounced “detective”) begins in a Hollywood Hills mansion and ends in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Novelist, screenwriter, and former Guided By Voices guitarist James Greer met French multi-instrumentalist Lola G. in the aforementioned mansion, and their fast friendship quickly blossomed into the fuzzy, garage-rock flower known as DTCV.
To say that the duo has come a long way in a short amount of time would be an understatement. After 2013’s Hilarious Heaven, they moved out to the Mojave Desert and recorded 2015 follow-up Uptime!, an album that internalizes what it’s like to live as hermits amidst an arid wasteland.
For their latest release, Confusion Moderne, DTCV decided to evolve even more drastically. That started with Lola, who made the call to write lyrics entirely in her native French language. Combine that with the continual source of inspiration that is the California desert, and you’ve got a strangely international-sounding psych-rock record that pulls you in immediately — even if you can’t understand whatever the hell Lola’s singing about.
Recorded with psych mastermind Joel Jerome, Confusion Moderne marks an exciting new step for a band that can’t stop moving forward. The album will be released in the US on April 8th via Xemu/Lolipop Records. Listen in to a stream of the entire album below.
