A couple of weeks ago, we re-published an article titled, Kurt Cobain and Why Suicide Isn’t Painless, an op-editorial that I wrote way back in 2014 on the 20th anniversary of his tragic death. Not surprisingly, however, we were once again mercilessly hammered with fans insisting he was murdered. In other words, that conspiracy is alive and well.
Which is why IDW’s probably smart to publish a graphic novel about the mystery surrounding his death, and why they will come October with Nicolas Otero’s Who Killed Kurt Cobain?. The award-winning artist based his work on Heloise Guay de Bellissen’s French novel, Le Roman de Boddah, carving out a story that follows Cobain’s life as narrated by his imaginary friend, Boddah.
Here’s a bite-sized synopsis:
Through the eyes of Boddah, readers get a front row seat to the highs and lows of one of music’s most influential voices like they’ve never experienced before. “I was 17 when Nirvana and Kurt Cobain came to Paris in 1992,” Otero recalls. “I saw them live the day before my graduation and it was… explosive, mind-blowing, sonic, and so powerful. When Kurt put an end to his life in 1994, I remember hearing the name of Boddah for the first time.
“I thought it could be a fantastic way to tell Kurt’s story, with Boddah as the narrator,” he adds. “Twenty years later, my hair is not long nor dirty, I’m the father of three wonderful kids, and life has given me such a great gift. I can finally draw this little voice and explore what I imagined Kurt’s mind and life were inside. I hope you’ll enjoy reading it as I enjoyed doing it. I’m 17 again today.”
