Chili Peppers return to the stage following health scare, play “Dark Necessities” live for the first time — watch

Plus, Anthony Kiedis discusses his health in new interview

Earlier this month, Red Hot Chili Peppers were forced to cancel a handful of shows when frontman Anthony Kiedis was hospitalized. Though admittedly still not 100%, Kiedis and his band returned to stage over the weekend for their headlining performance at Rock on the Range.

RHCP played a 15 song set on Sunday evening, treating the crowd to favorites like “Can’t Stop”, “Suck My Kiss”, and “Around the World”. The show marked the band’s first performance since announcing their forthcoming new record, The Getaway, so they fittingly used the show to deliver the live premiere of the LP’s lead single, “Dark Necessities”. Watch that performance above, plus a few other highlights ahead.

Prior to taking the stage, Kiedis gave an interview to ET Canada in which he discussed his health situation. He said that his initial hospitalization was caused by an intestinal flu that had been exacerbated by another virus he’d recently contracted as well as scar tissue left over from hernia operations. “That becomes an incredible painful situation where you get a fever and pass out,” he said.

“It was a painful and sad thing to have to cancel shows, we don’t really do that,” Kiedis went on. “I’d rather play deathly ill than not at all but in this particular instance I was starting to go down to the ground. I got some help and now I’ve got to figure things out.” The 53-year-old rocker does his best to lead an active, healthy lifestyle, but admits that his drive and his age my be warring against each other. “I surf most days and I like to charge, but every now and then, the body is like, ‘You’re doing something wrong, either fix it or we’re gonna let you know about it,’ and I think that my body let me know that I had to change my ways a little bit.”

He said he’s still recovering, but the incident has caused him to consider his own well-being a bit more closely. “I feel good, not great, but good. I think I had to get sick to take a look at myself and get to the causes and conditions of my overall health. So it turned out to be a good thing, albeit painful.”
