On their forthcoming sophomore album, Fall Forever, Brighton trio Fear of Men are intent on exploring new dynamics. The lush melodies of their 2014 debut Loom are still present, but they’re wrapped in a shroud of darkness. It’s a juxtaposition between raw human emotion and stark electronics, one first heard on “Trauma” and previewed again today with new song “Sane”.
“Sane” enters like a ghostly whisper through dense trees, only to present itself as a floating orb of light in the form of Jessica Weiss’ captivating vocals. Synths slowly rise beneath everything, a gentle yet immediate, gliding the song towards the sudden cascade of drums at the halfway mark. The whole thing has a sense of constant movement, from subtle to brazen, especially as Weiss sings the chorus, “It’s in your eyes when you’re perfectly sane/ It’s in your blood when you can’t bear these heavy thoughts again.”
