Mitski has dubbed her new album Puberty 2, and it’s becoming increasingly clear how fitting a title that is. Each new track released from the record reveals an emotionally tumultuous moment that perfectly aligns with the mental disarray of coming of age. First there was the breathtaking “You Best American Girl” and now the Brooklyn songwriter has returned with “Happy”.

The track starts out with a sputtering drum machine, adding pianos and horns as it snowballs into a sweet indie song with a sour message. “Happiness f**ks you,” Mitski said in a statement regarding “Happy”. “Once it’s in your hands, you try to hold onto it, but the nature of happiness is that it passes through and eventually leaves, and something else — sadness, anger, a low after the high — has to follow. This song is about this exhaustive and exhausting cycle, and how sometimes one would rather not have any of it at all than be constantly thrown about by the waves of these fleeting states.”

It’s a sentiment she captures poetically on every part of the track, but perhaps best on the second verse: “I locked the door behind him and I turned around to see/ Oh, the cookie wrappers and the empty cups of tea/ Well, I sighed and mumbled to myself, ‘Again, I have to clean.'” Mitski may just be developing into one of indie’s best lyricists, and you can hear why below.
