Henry Rollins wears many hats — he’s a musician (best known as vocalist in punk rock band Black Flag), journalist, actor, comedian and former ice cream scooper. In a new video for Funny or Die, Rollins tries his hand as a reader of children’s books, specifically: Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go!
It starts off alright… at least for the first 20-something seconds. “Am I a pain in the ass?” Rollins asks. “I’m complaining by the first page.” He did warn viewers early on that he would be both reading and deconstructing the timeless tale of venturing out into the world. But as the 16-minute video plays on, Rollins doesn’t only deconstruct the story, he demolishes it.
He speaks, in a wonderfully animated voice, of gender equality (“If I were a little girl, I would feel really left out of this book”), drugs and pain killers, race, and basically everything else that troubles our “Donald Trump America.”
Near the end, he states “the mean version of me is oh so cynical, the mean version of me is oh so clinical, but I hate misogyny and I find it everywhere.” He then continues to rip a favorite children’s classic to shreds, pointing out all things that are deemed non-PC by today’s standards — which is probably why he can find something wrong on nearly every page. If this book empowered who you are today, it may be best to skip out on this one, you’ll never look at it the same.
