The premise seems more fiction than documentary: Three black 7th graders from Brooklyn start a metal band and quickly go from playing in their basement to landing a record deal via Sony that nets them 1.8 million dollars. Director Luke Meyer’s Breaking A Monster follows teenage metal trio Unlocking the Truth as they navigate the pitfalls of instant stardom, and it proves once and for all that, when it comes to the icky ways of the music industry, truth can be stranger than fiction.

In his positive review of the film, which debuted at 2015’s SXSW, our own Michael Roffman called it “a testament to the misguided management of major labels, who have zero clue about what they’re actually doing to the carnal spirit of these kids.” Rather than get caught up with the group’s success, Meyer never loses sight of what’s really going on, resulting in “a stark portrait of how they’re dealing with not only success but growing up.”

Breaking A Monster is coming to theaters nationwide June 24th. Check out the trailer above, and read our interview with filmmaker Luke Meyer.
