Last month, 82-year-old Navy veteran and aerospace engineer John Hetlinger became a viral sensation when he took the stage at America’s Got Talent and delivered an on-point rendition of Drowning Pool’s “Bodies”. Drowning Pool guitarist CJ Pierce was one of the millions who viewed Hetlinger’s performance and subsequently invited him to join the band on stage for their set at Chicago Open Air on Friday.
“I picked up my phone and I got a handful of texts from a number of people because I guess it got out yesterday ahead of the airing,” Pierce told Loudwire. “We had a band group text on there as well, and then I watched it, and man, I am so entertained by it. It’s awesome to just see an 82-year-old man get out there and just belt out some metal — whether it was our song or any song, it was just killer to see him do that.”
Hetlinger — who opted for a Drowning Pool t-shirt in favor of his traditional toucan-branded white polo — joined the band at the conclusion of their eight-song Open Air set. Catch footage above. He’s reportedly set to join the band again later today at Ink in the Clink in Ohio.
