Franz Ferdinand are poised to begin working on their next album, but they’ll be doing so without longtime member Nick McCarthy. Today, the band announced that the keyboardist and guitarist, who’d been with the Glasgow outfit since its beginning in 2002, will be leaving in order to devote more time to his family.
“When we record and tour, it takes a long, full-time commitment lasting a minimum of a year and a half, most of which is spent away from home. Nick has a young family and does not want to be away from them for such a long period,” Franz Ferdinand said in a statement, but noted his departure may not “necessarily be a permanent situation.”
During his time at home and away from the band, the 41-year-old McCarthy said he’d “concentrate on production and writing some completely different things for a bit.”

Franz Ferdinand’s last album was 2013’s Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. They teamed up with Sparks for the collaborative album FFS last summer.
