Alexander underwent triple bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack in July 2014.
In a note posted to Instagram, Alexander wrote, “I did not think this could happen after having a triple bypass almost exactly 2 years ago. I was overwhelmed with sadness, not because of the fact that I could die but that I would have to say goodbye to my family. It can happen at any moment, and remember IT WILL HAPPEN ONE DAY so tell the people in your life you love them. Enjoy the days you have with them, they are limited.”
Alexander has been part of three different incarnations of Primus, first joining the band in 1988. After his departure in 1996, he rejoined the band in 2003. Six years later, he left Primus once again, only to return for a third time in 2013. He’s appeared on eight of the band’s albums, including 1991’s Sailing the Seas of Cheese, 1993’s Pork Soda, and their most recent release, 2014’s Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble.
In addition to Primus, Alexander has drummed on three albums by Puscifer, including 2007’s “V” Is for Vagina and 2015’s Money Shot. He’s also worked with A Perfect Circle.
