Last September, I had the great privilege of seeing Alcest in New York City. In case you’ve never had the out-of-body experience that is witnessing the French shoegaze/post-metal outfit live, here is a string of things I wrote on Twitter that evening:

At the time, Alcest were touring in support of Shelter, their fifth and arguably least conventionally metal record in their discography. The band is gearing up to release its follow-up, Kodama, in September, and it looks as though founding member Neige may be going back to his roots. Case in point: new track “Oiseaux De Proie”.

Here, crashing, pounding drums and weaving, winding guitars collide for a very intense seven minutes — it’s easily the hardest, loudest we’ve heard from Alcest since, say, 2010’s superb Écailles de Lune. Neige himself even makes something of a rare screaming appearance, sending his heart-stopping howls out into the ether at the halfway mark.

Check it out above (via Noisey). Kodama arrives September 30th via Prophecy.

Kodama Tracklist:
01. Kodama
02. Eclosion
03. Je Suis D’ailleurs
04. Untouched
05. Oiseaux De Proie
