Earlier this year, Marilyn Manson turned in a hell of a cover of David Bowie’s “Cat People (Putting Out Fire)” as part of a Giorgio Moroder tribute album from Shooter Jennings. Now, another duo has come together to tackle the Let’s Dance tune, this time turning it on its head completely. Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan and Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan have teamed for their own take on the song, released as a charity single benefitting the American Liver Foundation. The smokey rendition also features Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn LeNoble and Depeche Mode’s current drummer Christian Eigner.
Lanegan takes lead for most of the track, his hushed and husky vocals crawling along the desert landscape of the sensual cover. If Cat People had been a Western, the title track might’ve sounded just a little bit like this. Gahan comes in for backups and to belt out the “Been so long” coda that closes the track, pulling the song up from the dusty depths to gloriously somber heights.
