Tegan and Sara’s latest album, Love You to Death, has spawned a handful of music videos, including two (“BWU”, “Boyfriend”) helmed by actress/director Clea DuVall. The sisterly duo has returned the favor by contributing a new song called “Fade Out” to DuVall’s directorial debut, The Intervention.
Set to open in theaters on August 26th, the comedy-drama tells the story of four couples whose weekend getaway takes “a sharp turn when one of the couples discovers the entire trip was orchestrated to host an intervention on their marriage.” DuVall penned the script as well as stars alongside Natasha Lyonne, Ben Schwartz, Alia Shawkat, and Jason Ritter.
Echoing The Intervention’s focus on rocky relationships, Tegan and Sara’s track is wistful and bittersweet, aching for a time when things weren’t so complicated. “‘Fade Out’ captures the emotional complexity of the film,” DuVall tells Rolling Stone. “I love the duality of the dreamy melody with the somewhat bittersweet lyrics. When Sara first played me the finished song, all of my anxiety disappeared. The more I hear it, the more I fall in love with it.”

In addition to “Fade Out”, DuVall had Sara Quin help out with the The Intervention’s score. The last time Tegan and Sara contributed to a film was The Lego Movie’s Oscar-nominated “Everything Is Awesome!!!” back in 2014.
