Coconut oil has literally hundreds of uses, but nobody ever thought to use it as the title for a hip-hop EP … until now. Minneapolis alt hip-hop artist Lizzo (aka Melissa Jefferson) has announced the follow-up to last year’s Big GRRRL Small World, and all signs point to Coconut Oil being even more versatile than its namesake. The first of those signs is the ridiculously fun new track “Phone”, which will strike a chord with anyone who’s ever lost their phone and subsequently lost their mind. Talk about an anthem for our times. Even if you’re a responsible person who’s never dealt with this particular situation, the track’s skittering beat and Lizzo’s start-and-stop flow make it a worthwhile peek at how the other side lives. Oh, and listen through to the end, because there’s a punchline you won’t want to miss.

Coconut Oil is out October 7th via Nice Life Recording Company/Atlantic. Listen to “Phone” above.

Don’t Forget: Lizzo will headline Consequence of Sound and Red Bull Sound Select’s latest concert, set for September 23rd at Chop Shop & 1st Ward in Chicago. Lizzo will perform alongside Joey Purp and Jamila Woods. Click here for more details.
