Were you watching the Mercury Prize Gala last week? If not, you absolutely should have. During the awards festivities, Michael C. Hall (Dexter himself!) reprised his recurring role of recreating David Bowie’s “Lazarus”, yet again making us question whether spirit channeling is in fact possible. Our list this week is full of that kind of passionate performance — though perhaps not as much the whole “embodied rock legend” thing.
10. Lizzo – “Phone”

We around the Consequence of Sound office sure dig Lizzo. And, if you (like us) are preparing for her spot at the show we’re putting on tonight with Red Bull Sound Select at Chop Shop & 1st Ward in Chicago, there’s no better way to prepare than to get your feet moving to the new “Phone”. “Where the hell my phone?” the Minneapolis rapper repeats, a feeling many of us have felt (some of us a little too frequently). But just wait for that punchline. The early preview of her new Coconut Oil EP (out October 7th via Nice Life Recording Company/Atlantic) thrives on a minimalistic, click-snap groove. Check out Lizzo tonight, alongside Joey Purp and Jamila Woods by clicking here for more details. –Adam Kivel
