Just as the studio is trying to get a sequel off the grounds, Warner Bros. Pictures has announced a 20th anniversary re-release of the kids’ classic Space Jam. The film will return to 450 select US theaters on November 13th and 16th.
The first original theatrical movie featuring the iconic Looney Tunes, Space Jam sees NBA legend Michael Jordan being sucked into an animated world to help Bugs Bunny and pals take down a group of invading aliens in game of b-ball. It came about just after Jordan had tried his hand as a professional baseball player; if you think his batting skills were bad, wait till you see him try to act.
Despite (or because of?) the inert performance from its live-action star and his basketball buddies like Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and others, the film holds a special place in the hearts of many older millennials. It’s a top-to-bottom ridiculous concept, yet somehow still holds up better than 2003’s Looney Tunes: Back in Action. (The great Billy Murray cameo probably helps some.)
There will be two showtimes on Sunday, November 13th — 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM — and one 7:00 PM showtime on Wednesday, November 16th. To find a theater near you hosting the re-release, head to Fathom Events. And then, just for kicks, revisit the original 1996 website for the film.
