At the Drive In’s Omar Rodríguez-López and Le Butcherettes have a history that stretches back almost half a decade. Not only has Rodríguez-López produced all three of the Mexican garage punk outfit’s albums, but he and the band’s frontwoman Teri Gender Bender play alongside one another in Bosnian Rainbows and the newly formed Crystal Fairy. Most recently, the two musicians hit the studio to cover Depeche Mode, and Le Butcherettes were tapped to open ATDI’s reunion tour.
This week brings yet another collaboration between the acts, as Rodríguez-López has directed Le Butcherettes’ new music video for “My Mallely”, a rock banger taken from their latest LP, 2015’s A Raw Youth. Gender Bender stars in the clip, as engaging, animated, and intense in front of the camera as she is on record. Outfitted in an eye-catching red dress, she can be seen singing the track’s impassioned lyrics (“You’re beautiful!”) in contrasting locations — the crumbling ruins of Juarez, Mexico and the bustling sidewalks of New York City’s West Village and Times Square. Passersby gawk at her with curiosity and awe, especially when she descends into the Big Apple’s subway system.
In a statement to Consequence of Sound, Gender Bender spoke about the two filming locations:
“The juxtaposition of the video’s setting, place and time is a roller coaster of emotional history. Juárez. A lost city re-emerging. New York City. Feeling lost in a city that has been emerging. The duality is a constant in every feeling and way. No matter where you are, one absorbs their surroundings and grows within the chaotic element. That to me is the beauty of survivalism.”
