Never Trump Republicans asked Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to run for president

According to a Republican strategist, Johnson's "name certainly came up in some discussions"

Not all Republicans are on board with Donald Trump as their party’s nominee. Some members of the Never Trump movement have even gone as far to recruit third-party candidates to run opposite Trump and Hillary Clinton. One such name floated about in Never Trump circles? Professional wrestler turned A-list actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

According to Republican strategist Rick Wilson, Johnson’s name “came up in some discussions” earlier this summer. Wilson made the revelation during an appearance on The Jamie Weinstein Show.

Wilson said he was unsure if anyone from the Never Trump movement ever approached Johnson before landing on former congressional staffer Evan McMullin to represent them. “I wasn’t involved in that particular thing but his name certainly came up in some discussions,” Wilson explained.

For his part, Johnson has expressed interested in politics. In an interview with the Washington Post conducted in June, Johnson said, “I’ll be honest, I haven’t ruled politics out. I’m not being coy when I say that, but at the moment I am not sure. I can’t deny that the thought of being governor, the thought of being president, is alluring. And beyond that, it would be an opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives on a global scale. But there are a lot of other things I want to do first.”

So while Trump may have evaded a showdown with the Rock, it seems there’s still a very real possibility that at some point in the near future, “Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?” will become a presidential campaign slogan.
